Dancehall\/reggae DJs who select\u00a0<a title=\"Riddim\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Riddim\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">riddims<\/a> to play are called<a title=\"Selector (disc jockey)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Selector_(disc_jockey)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">selectors<\/a>. Deejays who are more likely to sing are sometimes called\u00a0<a title=\"Singjay\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Singjay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">singjays<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The term deejay came about as a result of the act of some selectors (as they were called) of the 60s and 70s such as\u00a0<a title=\"U-Roy\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/U-Roy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U-Roy<\/a> or\u00a0<a title=\"King Stitt\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/King_Stitt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">King Stitt<\/a> toasting to the\u00a0<a title=\"Dub music\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dub_music\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">version<\/a> side of popular records of the time. The version came about when the record company produced the\u00a0<a title=\"45 record\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/45_record\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">45 record<\/a> with the song, the flip side of which had the instrumental version of the song. This gave the deejays the chance to make up on-the-fly lyrics to the instrumental music.
