Miss World Organisers Cancel Bikini Round for 2013 Pageant

Miss World 2013 will be the 63rd edition of the Miss World pageant to be held in September 2013, at the Sentul International Convention Center, Jakarta and Nusa Dua Complex, Bali both in Indonesia. Yu Wenxia of China PR will crown her successor at the end of this event. This years pageant banned bikinis from the program replacing them with conservative beach sarongs, due to protests from Muslim groups.

As reported by NINIEK KARMINI Associated Press, Miss World has axed the famed bikinis from this year’s pageant in Indonesia, replacing the skimpy swimsuits with conservative beach sarongs amid mounting protests from hard-line Muslim groups, organizers said Thursday.

All of the more than 130 contestants will be required to wear Bali’s traditional long sarongs instead of the sexy bikinis that are historically part of the competition, said Adjie S. Soeratmadjie of the RCTI, the official broadcaster and local organizer.

Parts of the pageant will take place on the resort island of Bali and the final round will be held Sept. 28 near the capital, Jakarta. Indonesia is the world’s most populous Muslim country.

“There will no bikini in this year’s Miss World pageant to respect our traditional customs and values,” Soeratmadjie said, adding that the London-based Miss World Organization is on board with the decision.

“This is a sensitive issue in Indonesia. We have discussed it since last year and they have agreed,” he said.

The chairwoman of the Miss World Organization, Julia Morley, confirmed that none of the 137 contestants would wear a bikini.

“Indonesia is designing for us a very beautiful one-piece beachwear, and I’m very happy with them,” she told The Associated Press by phone from London, adding that the pageant will include a special beachwear fashion show.

“I don’t think Indonesia is the only country that has that culture,” Morley said. “But we like to work in the manner respectful to every country, and I cannot see why when you go to somebody’s country you should not behave respectfully.”

The pageant began in the 1950s, and the first winner was crowned in a two-piece bathing suit.

Soeratmadjie said the sarong would be made creatively and designed specifically for the event.

Controversy over the pageant has been mounting in Indonesia, which has a reputation as a tolerant, pluralist society that respects freedom of expression.

Clerics of the Indonesian Council of Ulema, or MUI, said they would send a letter to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to demand that the beauty pageant be canceled.

“That contest is just an excuse to show women’s body parts that should remain covered,” said Mukri Aji, a prominent cleric from West Java province’s MUI branch. “It’s against Islamic teachings.”

Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia, a hard-line Islamic group, said it planned to stage a protest and called for the competition to be moved elsewhere.

Most Muslims in Indonesia, a secular country of 240 million people, are moderate, but a small extremist fringe has become more vocal in recent years.

They have pushed through controversial laws — including an anti-pornography bill — and have been known to attack anything perceived as blasphemous, from transvestites and bars to “deviant” religious sects.

Lady Gaga was forced to cancel her sold-out concert in Indonesia in May following threats by Islamic hard-liners, who called her a “devil worshipper.” Jennifer Lopez toned down her sexy outfits and dance moves during a show in Jakarta last December.

Kazaky is a Ukrainian all-male synthpop dance group, originally made up of Kirill Fedorenko, Artur Gaspar, Stas Pavlov and Oleg Zhezhel. Philippines Hosts the Islamic Fashion Festival for the First Time

The Islamic Fashion Festival (IFF), a Southest Asian fashion event established in Malaysia in 2006, was hosted by the Philippines this year for the first time.

The festival, held in Manila’s Hotel InterContinental, featured the collections of eight designers, three of them from the Philippines, namely JC Buendia, Veejay Floresca and Jun Escario. The others were Tom Abang Saufi, Syaiful Baharim and Melinda Looi of Malaysia, Milo Migliavacca of Indonesia, and menswear brand Ya Jameel Homme.

The wife of the Prime Minister of Malaysia — who is an IFF patron — was in attendance with other Malaysian VIPs and royalty.

The Official Fashion Steps Out @ Orchard 2012 Casting Team has started its search for the Next Face of Asia 2012!
The NEXT FACE of ASIA 2012 is a contest in search for new-up-and-coming models in Asia held from now to 27 Apr 2012 (the “Contest Period”).

It is a modelling contest for aspiring models who wish to propel their modelling career to the next level.
It is organised and managed by Orchard Road Business Association and modernAge Design and Communications (the “Organisers”) in conjunction with Fashion Steps Out @ Orchard 2012 (“FSO 2012”).

If you think your models have what it takes to become our Next Face of Asia, submit your applications to us with the following.

1. Completed Contestant Application (including a signed Release and Waiver)

2. Three-minute video clip labelled clearly with applicant’s name. The videotape must meet the following requirements:

· Length: three (3) minutes maximum. Anything over three (3) minutes will not be considered.

· Format: DVD or mp4 only.

· Content: Tell us who you are and why you would make the ultimate Next Face of Asia 2012.

· Part of the video should include the applicant’s best runway walk.

3. Three colour photographs of the applicant, each to be taken within the previous 30 days and clearly labelled with his/her name.

Backstage Costs Of Fashion Week

sdfdsAfter 10 years of producing fashion shows, Thomas Onorato knows the importance of a well-run backstage.

“Just a couple years ago,” says Onorato, who, with partner Max Wixom, owns special-events company Onorato-Wixom, “I remember being backstage and an entire wall collapsed an hour before the show. People were screaming and the designer was freaking out. But instead of having a breakdown, we pulled it together and made it work despite adding additional cost to backstage production. Had we not factored in the potential for snafus in the budget, it [the fashion show] would have been a disaster.”

The world may see fashion models in exquisite clothes strutting down the runway during Fashion Week, but they rarely get a glimpse of the action behind the scenes or the associated costs. A designer once asked Onorato to change all the lights to a soft pink, so a celebrity walking in the show would look younger. The total cost: $20,000.

New Faces: What type of models do you look for when finding new talent?
Elite Models: When looking for models, we typically look for talent that are marketable in our area. We look for all styles of models to promote through our network; editorial and commercial models.

New Faces: Why do you like using New Faces to scout new models?
Elite Models: New Faces is a great avenue to scout talent, not only for our Toronto office, but for our offices around the world.

New Faces: Does Elite have a “look” that you always seek out to find?
Elite Models: We are always looking for “The Look”, which can change from season to season.

New Faces: Of the recent faces you’ve discovered, has there been a common element that made them stand out over others, and what would you recommend to other models for them to stand out?
Elite Models: From the faces that I have contacted through New Faces, it always helps to have very clear pictures, with great lighting, and little makeup. I often find it difficult to see what a person looks like when they use a webcam to take their pictures.

New Faces: What are some of the facts that models need to know when getting into the industry?
Elite Models: Modeling is a business, and as a model, you are your own business! Like any business, it takes time, effort, commitment, and patience to become a successful model. Success does not happen over night.

New Faces: What common mistakes do you see models making, even if they already have what it takes?
Elite Models: For models, a casting or a go see is a job interview, and should be regarded as such. Time and time again I hear from clients that models seem ill prepared. Would you show up to a job interview with a potential employer wearing sneakers, with your hair not done, without a resume? No.

New Faces: There are different types of modeling, including print, commercial and runway modeling, is there a particular type of model that is best suited for each?
Elite Models: Typically in our market, we look for girls that are 5’8″ and taller, as Toronto is a very commercial market but we also have our fair share of great editorials and show. A truly versatile model can excel in all of these fields. Girls that are 5’10” and up, of course are better suited for the European catwalks should they have the rest of the package (confidence, experience, and a strong portfolio).

New Faces: The modeling industry being what it is, there’s never any assurance that one person will succeed over another, but once discovered how can models continue to achieve success in the industry?
Elite Models: There are never any guarantees. We as agents know what clients want, and supply our clients with just that. It is also our job to provide management for our models. We can open the door for the Models, but it’s up to the individual to walk through it. It’s those models that can work with clients and be engaging, polite, and most of all professional, are the models that are going to get booked again by that client.

Miss Universe 2007: Miss Japan Riyo Mori

In a contest tainted by protests, a banned dress; a floor tumble and the withdrawal of one beauty queen on the grounds of the pageant degrades women, a Miss Japan was for the second time ever, crowned Miss Universe 2007 Monday night.Mori, 20, the 56th and second Japan winner of the title, was given her $US250,000 diamond-and-pearl crown by last year’s winner, Zuleyka Rivera of Puerto Rico, watched by a live audience of 10,000 and some 600 million television viewers worldwide.

Miss USA Rachel Smith, who slipped and fell to the floor during the evening gown competition and was jeered by the Mexican audience during the interview phase because as what they saw as US unfriendliness towards illegal immegrants, was the contest’s fourth runner-up.

Miss Sweden, Isabel Lestapier Winqvist, unexpectedly pulled out of the event because of complaints in her country that it degrades women.
